Dr Simon Abson is a locally trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon who has recently commenced at the John Hunter and Royal Newcastle Centre. He is also based privately at Lake Macquarie Specialist Medical Centre, Gateshead, offering his services at Lingard Private and Maitland Private Hospitals.

Dr Abson obtained his medical degree from University of Sydney in 2004. Dr Abson has trained and worked within the Hunter New England Area Health Service (HNEAH) since 2005, as well Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Taree. In this time he recognised the importance of a local spine service for the rural community.

Dr Abson has a particular interest in Spinal surgery and Trauma. He completed his fellowship in adult and paediatric spine at Oxford University Trust Hospitals in the United Kingdom and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedics and Trauma in 2016.

Dr Abson also operates as a general spine surgeon offering treatment for paediatric spinal deformity and trauma as well as adult spinal deformity, trauma, degenerative and tumour processes. In his time in Oxford he developed his surgical skills to include early onset and adolescent scoliosis management in a busy paediatric centre.

Dr Abson is committed to teaching through his affiliation with the Hunter Postgraduate Medical Institute (HPMI) and public hospital posts and hopes to continue this into the future for the Hunter Area. Dr Abson can be contacted through his rooms at Lake Macquarie Specialist Centre.
