Summary of this page

Dr Tom Ford is a patient-centred Consultant Interventional Cardiologist living on the Central Coast, NSW. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle and the current National Young ambassador for Australia to the European Association of Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (EAPCI).

Tom was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and attended the University of Dundee qualifying in 2007 receiving the University Medal (Captain WA Low Prize and Medal). He completed further medical training in Edinburgh where he gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians before emigrating to Australia in 2010. He trained as a cardiologist in Sydney’s Prince of Wales and St George Hospitals and qualified as a specialist in 2015 (FRACP).

Dr Ford recently completed 3 additional years of Interventional Cardiology training in Glasgow. He is a high-volume complex PCI operator working almost exclusively via the wrist (radial artery). Continuity of care for his patients is assured with work in both local public and private hospitals. He feels privileged to be part of the small team instigating and supporting 24/7 primary PCI for STEMI and emergency heart interventions for the Central Coast.

Dr Ford has a clinical focus on definitive diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment for:

– Chest pain (angina) and breathlessness

– Heart attacks

– Heart failure

– Heart valve disease (e.g. aortic stenosis)

– Structural heart interventions including percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) /atrial septal defects (ASD)


Research

Tom is an invited speaker and faculty at leading national and international cardiology scientific sessions including EuroPCR, Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT in USA) and European Society of Cardiology (ESC congress). His research has been published in the most influential cardiology journals and was recently recognized with two prestigious accolades firstly from the European wide PCR organization (EuroPCR Best Abstract – Winner PCR’s got talent) and secondly from the British Cardiac Society (‘Best of the Best’ Clinical Abstract – Interventional Cardiology).

Dr Ford emigrated to Australia 10 years ago after gaining the MRCP at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. He qualified as a Cardiologist in 2015 (FRACP) after completing advanced Cardiology training in Sydney (Prince of Wales Hospital and St George Hospitals). In 2019, Dr Ford returned from three additional years of fellowship and training in Glasgow (Golden Jubilee National Hospital). This centre has the largest volume of coronary stent procedures in the UK. His training in two continents over eight years exposed him to a high volume of Interventional Cardiology procedures including complex stenting, emergency care of heart attacks and patients in shock, structural heart interventions and novel invasive treatments including those for resistant hypertension.

During his time in Glasgow, he led clinical research projects into coronary heart disease leading internationally recognised clinical trials with state-of-the-art invasive testing and personalised treatment for angina patients. This work is directly relevant to help diagnose and improve quality of life for patients with angina, chest pain and/or breathlessness. His PhD was submitted in 2019 to the University of Glasgow and won the Bellahouston Medal as the highest distinction for the excellence of theses submitted for the degrees of MD, DDS and PhD. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and an Honorary Conjoint Associate at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.
